A British tourist, aged 56, tragically passed away in the Canary Islands after falling approximately 20 feet due to a hotel railing collapsing. Another holidaymaker, aged 54, also fell and sustained serious injuries during the incident in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote early this morning.
The 56-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene, while the 54-year-old was critically injured and promptly taken to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, where they are currently in a critical condition.
The event occurred around 1:30 am when emergency services were alerted about two individuals falling from a significant height within the hotel premises. Responders from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local police, and the Spanish Civil Guard were dispatched to the location.
Reports indicate that the railing that collapsed was situated in an elevated section of the hotel complex. The Civil Guard has commenced an inquiry to ascertain if there was any negligence in maintaining the railing or ensuring the hotel’s safety measures.
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office informed the Mirror: “We are offering assistance to the family of the deceased British man and the family of the injured British man in Spain.”
In a separate incident in August, a 22-year-old British tourist in Spain sustained severe injuries after falling from a hotel balcony in Ibiza. The fall occurred from the third floor of the Marco Polo hotel in San Antonio, Ibiza, resulting in chest and head injuries.
