Apology Issued for Rental License Oversight

An apology has been issued by Rachel Reeves’s real estate agent for neglecting to apply for a rental license on her behalf, despite initially offering to do so.

The agency expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to their clients, aiming to resolve the dispute that led to calls from the Conservative party for the Chancellor’s dismissal. Downing Street reiterated their faith in Ms. Reeves, who is now focusing on preparations for the upcoming Budget in the following month.

This development followed an apology from Ms. Reeves to Keir Starmer and his ethics advisor for the oversight regarding her family property in Dulwich, South London. The property, jointly owned with her husband, was rented out after their move to 11 Downing Street post the Labour party’s election triumph last year.

On Wednesday, she learned that the property lacked a necessary “selective license” mandated by the local Southwark council. This revelation prompted demands from the Conservative party for her removal over violation of housing regulations.

Ms. Reeves disclosed emails on Thursday between her husband and the agency, confirming that Harvey & Wheeler had committed to applying for the license. Nevertheless, she acknowledged full responsibility for the situation in her communication with the Prime Minister.

The owner of the estate agency, Giles Martin, explained that while their standard practice does not involve applying for licenses on behalf of clients, a former property manager had offered to do so before abruptly resigning. The failure to submit the application was an oversight for which they apologized to the property owners.

Government records revealed email exchanges between the Chancellor’s husband and the firm discussing the rental process for the South London property between July and August 2024. The correspondence indicated the cost of the license and the intended timing of its application.

Ms. Reeves later confirmed the agency’s assurance to her husband regarding the license application but acknowledged their failure to follow through. She took responsibility for not identifying the issue sooner and promptly applied for the license upon discovery.

Southwark council indicated that no punitive measures were planned against Ms. Reeves for the licensing lapse, emphasizing that enforcement actions are typically reserved for landlords who disregard warnings about non-compliance.

Upon realizing the oversight, Ms. Reeves promptly initiated the license application process. The council highlighted the importance of selective licenses for landlords in specific areas, ensuring tenant protection and compliance with housing standards.
