“Deadly Glacier Avalanche in Himalayas Sparks Climate Change Alarm”

Geoscientist Jakob Steiner describes the recent event as resembling a piece of the glacier in Nepal’s Himalayas being sliced off and tumbling down like a sheer drop from the mountain. The massive ice, rock, and sediment avalanche from a height of 5,000 meters dammed the river temporarily and formed a lake after descending 1.2 km. As the lake filled with water, it breached its dam, releasing a violent torrent that devastated villages downstream on both sides of the border, burying them in mud. The aftermath also saw the formation of additional lakes that could potentially burst, worsening the situation. The disaster has claimed at least 579 lives, with around 1,400 individuals missing, including 32 Canadian nationals.

Indigenous people had cautioned climbers about Langtang Lirung, known as an “angry mountain,” reiterating their concerns annually. Some climate scientists are hesitant to solely attribute this collapse to human-caused climate change, but experts specializing in glacier hydrology and global warming’s impact on the cryosphere have long warned about such catastrophic events, particularly in the Himalayas.

The devastating event underscores the urgency of addressing climate change, which has significantly altered the mountain region. The warming temperatures, linked to fossil fuel emissions, have stressed the Himalayas, leading to altered precipitation patterns, increased snowmelt, more avalanches, and rapid glacier retreat. The loss of glacier coverage has been substantial, with 21% disappearing in the early 21st century due to global warming’s effects.

Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) like the recent one have become a heightened threat due to global warming’s impact on ice loss and the subsequent expansion of glacial lakes. The risk of such floods affects millions of people living in proximity to glacial regions worldwide, particularly in the Himalayas, the Andes, and the Alps.

The disaster in Nepal serves as a stark reminder of the need for proactive measures and global cooperation to mitigate the impacts of climate change. While the event underscores the role of climate change, it also highlights the importance of preparedness and early warning systems. Scientists emphasize the necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to prevent future calamities, urging collective action to address the root causes rather than relying solely on adaptation strategies.
