U.S. Legislators Urge Trump to Halt Conflict with Iran

A group of U.S. legislators urged Donald Trump to halt the conflict with Iran on the six-month anniversary, even as the President’s stance on the war remains ambiguous.

Trump has praised the impact of military strikes and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in achieving U.S. objectives. In a social media post, he shared images, including that of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed in February during airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel to commence the war.

Recent weeks have seen Tehran and Washington exchanging aggressive rhetoric, with diplomatic efforts outsourced to third parties. Trump, notably, focused publicly on trade talks with Canada this week.

Anticipated shifts in Trump’s focus include the upcoming Nov. 3 midterms, where he has actively sought to influence voting mechanisms. Additionally, preparations for a Republican mini-convention in two weeks are underway.

Rep. Adam Smith highlighted the toll on military personnel in a statement, citing casualties and financial implications of the ongoing conflict.

The war has resulted in significant losses on both sides, including the elimination of key Iranian figures. The economic impact on Iran has been severe, with soaring prices and a sharp GDP contraction projected for the year.

Democrats have called for transparency regarding the war’s cost, questioning Secretary Hegseth’s estimate. House Minority Leader Jeffries demanded an end to the conflict.

While few Republicans oppose the war, Rep. Massie criticized military strategies and called for adherence to the War Powers Act.

Trump’s recent statements suggest a reluctance to engage in negotiations with Iran, emphasizing economic pressure over military escalation.

Reports indicate a partial return of diplomatic staff to missions in the Middle East, signaling a potential shift in the administration’s approach.

Former U.S. diplomat Brett Bruen criticized the administration’s handling of the conflict, citing missed opportunities for a less costly resolution. He expressed skepticism about a swift conclusion to the ongoing strife in the region.
