“Emmys Move to Prime Video in Landmark Deal”

In a significant development, the Emmy Awards are set to transition to Prime Video from 2027 onwards under a new agreement between Amazon and the Television Academy. This move marks the end of a long-standing tradition where the ceremony was broadcast on major networks for over seven decades.

The shift to streaming services reflects the growing influence of platforms like Prime Video in the prestigious categories of the Emmys. Historically, the awards show has rotated between ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC in what was known as the “Wheel Deal,” but now, it will have a single home for the next six years starting from the upcoming September awards.

The move to Prime Video does not require a subscription, ensuring that the Emmys will remain accessible to viewers without any additional cost. This contrasts with the Oscars’ recent deal with YouTube, where the ceremony will be exclusively streamed starting in 2029, following a decline in traditional broadcast viewership.

Despite facing a drop in viewership over the years, the Emmys aim to leverage Prime Video’s reach to attract a broader audience, especially younger viewers. By showcasing Emmy-nominated content on the platform, including acclaimed shows like “Widow’s Bay” and “The Studio,” Amazon hopes to boost viewership and engagement with the awards show.

While the transition to streaming marks a significant change, the focus remains on celebrating excellence in television content, regardless of the delivery platform. According to the Chairman of the Television Academy, Cris Abrego, the goal is to continue recognizing outstanding work in the industry, irrespective of how it reaches audiences.

Looking ahead, the Emmy Awards on Prime Video will continue to evolve, with potential flexibility in the future to explore different dates for the ceremony. This partnership represents a new chapter for the Emmys, embracing the digital landscape while upholding the legacy of honoring exceptional television programming.
