Kevin Murison’s bagpiping performances on one of Ottawa’s bustling sidewalks draw varied responses, mostly positive. Murison, 35, often seen in full Highland attire on the bridge near the Ottawa Locks by the Château Laurier, receives an abundance of praise for his playing. Despite some individuals covering their ears as they pass by, Murison is encouraged by the numerous compliments he receives.
While playing last year, a Brazilian tourist was so moved by his performance that she tearfully embraced him and even shared her phone number for a potential visit to South America. However, not all encounters have been pleasant. Murison recalls an incident where a man demanded he stop playing, leading to a physical altercation resulting in injuries to Murison and damage to his bagpipes.
The most recent incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon when an individual approached Murison under the guise of taking a photo, only to reveal a knife. The situation escalated quickly, leaving Murison injured and in need of medical attention. Despite the traumatic experience, Murison remains determined to continue pursuing his passion for bagpiping.
Following the attack, a passerby called emergency services, leading to the swift apprehension of the suspect. A 25-year-old man now faces multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and breaching probation. The police described the attack as unprovoked.
Despite the setback, Murison has been overwhelmed by the support shown by his band and the larger bagpiping community. With a new bag provided by his bandmates and an outpouring of concern, Murison remains thankful for the solidarity he has received.
While Murison’s playing may be temporarily halted due to his injuries, he remains resolute in his commitment to return to the sidewalk and continue sharing his music.
