Darline Graham Wins SC Republican Primary, Trump’s Support Key

Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, emerged victorious in the Republican primary runoff for the U.S. Senate in South Carolina on Tuesday, as projected by U.S. media outlets. This win is seen as a significant success for President Donald Trump, who had endorsed Graham’s candidacy and supported her with substantial campaign contributions from his MAGA INC super PAC.

Following her appointment to fill the Senate seat after her brother’s passing in July, Graham defeated Representative Ralph Norman and is now set to compete in the November election for a full six-year Senate term. Trump, during a rally in Myrtle Beach, S.C., declared his strong support for Graham by stating, “I am on the ballot.”

The 62-year-old Graham will face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, in the upcoming general election. Graham is anticipated to secure an easy victory in the deeply conservative state of South Carolina. This primary election serves as one of the tests of Trump’s influence with voters ahead of this year’s midterm elections, where he aims to prevent Democrats from gaining control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate from the Republican party.

Despite Trump’s mixed record of endorsements in this election cycle, his financial backing for Graham through MAGA INC amounted to $827,711 US, as reported in the filing with the U.S. Federal Election Commission on Monday. This financial support signifies a rare instance of the president actively backing his preferred candidate.

During a recent rally, Graham addressed a previous debate misstep where she admitted to lacking knowledge about national security issues, a key area that defined her brother’s career in the Senate. She acknowledged this error and redirected her focus to domestic matters such as Trump’s immigration policies and anti-abortion advocacy. Prior to her Senate appointment, Graham’s advocacy work primarily centered around individuals with physical disabilities, with no prior experience in public office.

South Carolina has consistently supported Trump in his presidential campaigns and is not expected to significantly impact the battle for congressional control. Norman, a 73-year-old real estate developer and long-standing U.S. House member, faced defeat in this runoff election following an unsuccessful bid for governor.

This electoral outcome marks a crucial step for Darline Graham as she progresses towards the general election, backed by Trump’s endorsement and financial support.
