NASA initiated a new mission on Sunday by launching the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a repurposed spy satellite aimed at exploring key mysteries in astrophysics and cosmology. The roughly $4 billion US project was transported from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Planned for a five-year mission duration, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope may potentially extend its operations for an additional five years due to its fuel capacity. The telescope’s journey will lead it to Lagrange Point 2, approximately 1.6 million kilometers from Earth.

NASA envisions the telescope becoming a household name comparable to renowned orbiting observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope.
Distinguished by its panoramic capabilities, the Roman telescope is set to create a comprehensive 3D map of the universe, aiding in the understanding of dark energy and dark matter. Its main survey, spanning over a year, will encompass more than two billion galaxies. By scrutinizing the pull of dark matter and the push of dark energy across the universe, Roman intends to unravel these cosmic enigmas.
