Conservation efforts to save a rare bird species in the United Kingdom have received a significant boost from a highly successful male bird named AU. Mark Thomas, a conservationist, credits AU for his exceptional breeding abilities that have played a crucial role in sustaining the Montagu’s harrier population in the UK.
AU, a 10-year-old male bird known as the “golden boy,” has fathered a remarkable total of 16 offspring, with 10 of them born in the last two years. Thomas, who leads the species conservation at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), highlighted AU’s vital contribution in upholding the species in the UK.
Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe during the spring after spending their winters in Africa and parts of Asia. Despite being globally classified as a species of least concern, their population has been declining. In the UK, the species faced a severe decline, with zero breeding pairs reported in the ’70s before a slight resurgence in the mid-aughts.
The successful breeding season in the UK this year can be largely attributed to AU’s efforts. Having raised four chicks in 2025, AU returned this year to engage in elaborate mating displays, attracting the attention of three female birds. Eventually, two females nested with AU, resulting in the birth of six chicks, providing hope for the species’ future in the UK.
Conservationists are closely monitoring the new hatchlings, with plans to attach satellite trackers to two juvenile harriers for the first time. This tracking initiative aims to observe the birds’ migration patterns and potential return to the UK for breeding, offering valuable insights for future conservation efforts.
