“Céline Dion Opens Up About Battle with Rare Illness”

Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by shedding light on her battle with an illness and the measures she has taken to address it. The renowned Canadian singer shared in an exclusive profile with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022 of the rare neurological autoimmune condition.

The excruciating pain, which intensified in 2020, sometimes left her barely able to walk, necessitating high doses of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive disorder that tends to worsen over time and affects a small fraction of the population. Its symptoms, such as rigid muscles and painful spasms triggered by stress or sudden movements, lack a clear cause and do not have a specific approved treatment. However, various therapies can assist in managing the condition.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to reasons like a cough or sinus infection, concealing the true extent of her suffering. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to seek extensive treatment later on.

Following the diagnosis, Dion halted all her scheduled performances. Since her last public appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, she has been absent from the stage but is gearing up for her comeback this September.

Dion’s recovery routine involves a rigorous regimen comprising medication, physical therapy, vocal exercises, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice a week and ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming performances. Described as constantly in motion in the Harper’s feature, Dion is portrayed as someone reluctant to remain still for long periods, fearing a recurrence of her symptoms.

Grateful for her recovery and the chance to perform again, Dion views it as a miraculous opportunity that she cherishes. Emphasizing the importance of gratitude, she highlighted the choice to appreciate what one has rather than taking it for granted. Feeling strong, excited, and slightly nervous, Dion is eager to return to the stage for her Paris residency, set to encompass 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 the following year.
