Hannah, a 37-year-old yoga enthusiast who prefers to use only her first name, expressed her enjoyment of the space for its stretching sessions, grounding effect, and sense of belonging. Legions nationwide, traditionally catering to veterans, are now striving to engage younger individuals like Hannah through creative activities, affordable dining options, and a welcoming atmosphere. To commemorate the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary, first-time members are being offered complimentary memberships this year.
Volunteers at Legions emphasize that military background is not a prerequisite for participation. Hannah, who has family members with military service, feels a personal connection to the environment, citing a sense of familiarity through photographs and anecdotes.
Supporting veterans and embracing new community members have always been key functions of Legions, acting as hubs for veteran assistance, Remembrance Day events, and communal gatherings. The Royal Canadian Legion has already welcomed over 100,000 new members in 2026, surpassing a total membership count of 300,000. Despite this progress, some Legions have faced closures due to financial and operational challenges, such as branches in Halifax and Edmonton.
Dennis Mills, the president of the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, shared his branch’s transformative journey from near closure to revitalization. By offering affordable meals, concerts, and opening its doors to the wider community, the Bala Legion has thrived. Plans are in place to further evolve the Legion by developing affordable housing units on its premises to ensure sustainability.
Mills emphasized the importance of attracting new members to uphold the Legion’s community service and vibrancy. He urged all Canadians to consider joining and contributing to the Legion’s ongoing legacy of support and camaraderie.
