Energy suppliers will now be required to fix faulty smart meters within a 90-day timeframe as per new regulations that will be implemented. This move aims to address issues faced by many households whose smart meters are not functioning correctly, leading to a lack of automatic meter readings being sent to suppliers.
Failure by energy companies to rectify these “dumb” smart meters within the stipulated 90 days could result in penalties or legal consequences imposed by the regulatory body Ofgem. The enforcement of these rules is set to commence in early May following recent changes allowing households to claim £40 in compensation for any installation issues with smart meters.
Households will be eligible for the compensation if they experience delays exceeding six weeks for a smart meter appointment. Additionally, compensation will be applicable if an installation appointment fails due to the supplier’s fault or if the supplier does not provide a resolution plan within five working days of a reported issue.
Smart meters are widely used, with nearly 40 million households and small businesses across the UK utilizing them. Energy suppliers are mandated to replace all smart meters connected to 2G and 3G networks before the services are discontinued by 2033.
Minister for Energy Consumers, Martin McCluskey, emphasized the importance of timely smart meter repairs to ensure customers can effectively manage energy consumption and reduce costs. Victoria Bacon, Director of Communications at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the progress made in improving the smart meter experience, with a high percentage of users satisfied with their devices.
The new regulations are aimed at enhancing consumer confidence in smart meters, promoting their installation, and empowering users to control energy usage and access cost-saving tariff options.
