“Nursery Teacher Murders Partner’s Child in Bathtub”

A nursery teacher, afflicted with illness, intentionally caused the death of her partner’s four-year-old daughter by sitting on her in a bathtub until she drowned. The teacher, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, committed this heinous act due to a disturbing motive. Hughes, in a fit of rage after feeling neglected by her partner Elie, who had left the child in her care while he attended a job interview, decided to carry out the brutal attack on January 23, 2023.

Before the tragic incident, Hughes expressed her feelings of betrayal and heartbreak to Elie, stating, “You broke my heart; I’m going to burn yours. How could you do that to me?” She then proceeded to place little Nada-Jane in the bathtub, where she remained seated on the child until she tragically drowned.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Nada-Jane had been sexually assaulted twice prior to her death. During the trial at Johannesburg High Court in South Africa, Hughes admitted to having borderline personality disorder at the time of the incident but acknowledged her actions. She explained that an argument with Elie regarding his alleged infidelity triggered the event, culminating in the fatal outcome.

Following the murder, Hughes made multiple suicide attempts. During her sentencing, she attributed her behavior to a traumatic upbringing and mental health struggles. Testimonies from a social worker emphasized Hughes’ history of bullying and self-harm, indicating deep remorse over the tragic events.

However, Judge Richard Mkabela deemed Hughes’ actions as premeditated, pointing to incriminating text messages exchanged before the murder that revealed her intent. The court concluded that Hughes followed through on her threats towards Elie, leading to the devastating loss of Nada-Jane.

Hughes and Elie began their relationship in 2021, with Hughes moving in with Elie and Nada-Jane. Testimonies presented in court depicted a tumultuous relationship, marked by Hughes’ repeated threats against the child.

Hughes was convicted of premeditated murder and rape, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence. Elie, the grieving parent, expressed that no punishment could adequately address the profound loss he endured, stating that true justice may never be achieved in this lifetime.
