“UK Braces for Impact of Hurricane Melissa”

Forecasters have indicated that the remnants of Hurricane Melissa will impact the UK in the coming days.

In the past 48 hours, Melissa has caused fatalities in the Caribbean, with dozens reported dead. The hurricane is currently moving towards Bermuda, prompting the government there to advise citizens to complete all necessary hurricane preparations, avoid traveling on roads, and stay indoors.

Jamaica experienced wind speeds exceeding 187mph recently, leading to concerns about the potential death toll, which may not be fully known for days due to ongoing rescue operations amidst extensive flooding, blocked major routes, and widespread power outages.

Meteorologists have highlighted the likelihood of the storm affecting weather patterns in Britain and northern Europe as it traverses the Atlantic.

A low-pressure system is expected to bring wet and windy conditions from the northwest on Sunday, according to Tom Crabtree, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office. Nonetheless, this is deemed typical for autumn and is not anticipated to be severe.

Crabtree elaborated that the remnants of ex-Hurricane Melissa will likely pass over the far northwest of the UK late Sunday into early Monday, introducing milder air and increased rainfall, particularly over western hills. Uncertainty remains regarding the exact path of this weather system, but it is likely to bring unsettled conditions in the following week.

The UK government has arranged charter flights to assist British nationals departing Jamaica post-Hurricane Melissa.

British nationals are encouraged by the Foreign Office to utilize commercial flights as their primary means of leaving the country.

Following a pledge of £2.5 million in emergency funding to Jamaica, Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed shock at the hurricane’s impact, prompting the UK to facilitate the safe return of affected British nationals.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the UK’s commitment to assisting British nationals in Jamaica, chartering flights to augment available commercial services for a prompt return to the UK.

Specialist Rapid Deployment Teams are en route to Jamaica to support the evacuation efforts and provide necessary consular aid.
