Panic gripped JFK Airport when an off-duty customs officer allegedly fired shots at a driver, causing fear among tourists. The Port Authority officers are currently investigating the incident that occurred early Tuesday morning. Gunfire erupted close to terminal 8 around 4:48 am, damaging a vehicle but causing no injuries. A responding police officer reportedly discharged their weapon.
The off-duty customs officer was questioned in connection with the shooting. Pictures from the scene depicted a significant presence of emergency service vehicles near JFK Airport on Tuesday morning. Traffic cones were placed, and multiple police officers were positioned at a highway intersection.
The situation led to congestion in the southbound lane, prompting its closure with traffic redirected to local roads. One lane was reopened by 7 am. Passengers were advised to utilize the Air Train to JFK and verify their flight status before departure. The Mirror has reached out to the New York City Police Department for a comment.
