Fire TV Stick users need to exercise caution when installing new apps on their devices due to a recent development. The popular tool called “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, leaving room for a deceptive copycat app aiming to defraud users.
The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace was first noticed over the weekend, creating concern among Fire TV owners. Downloader has been a valuable tool for nearly ten years, enabling users to search for and install apps not found in official marketplaces.
Despite its widespread usage, the app faced a temporary suspension as disclosed by its developer, Elias Saba. According to Saba, a recent update caused Amazon to flag Downloader as a web browser, violating Amazon’s policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.
In response to the suspension, Saba has removed the browser identification in the latest update to comply with Amazon’s guidelines and hopes for the app’s reinstatement soon. Meanwhile, a fraudulent version of Downloader has emerged, attempting to exploit unsuspecting Fire TV owners by charging a weekly fee.
Saba advises users not to download the fake app and to report it to Amazon. For those with the authentic Downloader already installed, it is recommended not to uninstall it as reinstallation may not be possible until Amazon resolves the issue. Users are also advised to disable Auto Offload to prevent automatic removal of the app.
If Amazon approves the necessary modifications, Downloader could become available on Fire TV devices again later in the week, although users are advised to stay vigilant.
