BT has announced a crucial update regarding landline services, signaling a significant shift away from traditional copper cables that have been in use for over a century. The transition to new digital services utilizing internet technology is set to occur by January 31, 2027, prompting millions of households to make the switch.
The move away from the outdated copper infrastructure is deemed necessary by companies like BT due to its inefficiency, unreliability, and inability to meet modern connectivity demands. BT’s latest system, Digital Voice, offers enhanced features such as improved call quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and better call screening to combat scams and unwanted solicitations.
While over three million UK homes have already upgraded to Digital Voice, many more households are yet to make the transition. BT emphasizes the importance of acting promptly to avoid disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches.
Switching to digital services is relatively straightforward for most users, with existing BT handsets often compatible with digital landlines. Retaining the current phone number and maintaining consistent billing are assured, without any additional costs for transitioning to digital. In cases where a simple plug-in is not sufficient, contacting the provider for assistance or arranging an engineer visit may be necessary.
BT advises customers with special requirements, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to inform their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support arrangements are made. It is crucial for individuals to verify their readiness for the transition before the retirement of the copper network.
Allison Kirkby, BT Group Chief Executive, highlights the importance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to provide modern, secure, and reliable connectivity. BT’s substantial investment in infrastructure aims to enhance connectivity for homes, businesses, and communities, fostering growth and opportunities through digital networks.
