A member of the Labour Party representing Hillsborough families has cautioned against disregarding safety concerns at football stadiums, emphasizing the repercussions of such negligence. Paula Barker, the MP for Liverpool Wavertree, drew attention to the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy following the government’s commitment to facilitating the attendance of Israeli fans at an upcoming football match in Birmingham. This move comes in light of Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters being prohibited from a Europa League match against Aston Villa due to safety apprehensions.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy assured that the government would allocate the necessary resources to assist the police in ensuring the safety of fans at the upcoming match. She expressed dismay over the decision, citing the perceived risk posed by Israeli and Jewish fans as a key factor. In parliamentary discussions, Ms. Barker referenced the Hillsborough disaster, underscoring the significance of addressing and not overlooking safety concerns raised in advance.
Regarding the Maccabi Tel Aviv incident, Ms. Barker stressed the importance of heeding safety advisory groups’ recommendations to prevent a dangerous precedent of disregarding safety concerns. In response, Ms. Nandy refuted claims of attempting to overturn safety advice and reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing fan and community safety.
Ms. Nandy also highlighted the broader principle of inclusivity, stating that resources alone would not determine the inclusion of Maccabi Tel Aviv fans at the match. She contextualized the decision within the current climate of rising antisemitism and emphasized the importance of upholding the principle that no individual should be excluded based on identity.
The government remains engaged with local authorities, including West Midlands Police and Birmingham City Council, to assess and manage potential risks associated with the match. The safety advisory group will reconvene if necessary to review updated risk assessments and explore viable solutions to ensure the safety of all fans. The fundamental principle of inclusivity and public participation without discrimination remains a cornerstone of the government’s approach to the situation.
