“Foreign Secretary Urges Israel-Hamas Ceasefire in Gaza”

The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of not abandoning Gaza as a region caught between peace and conflict. Yvette Cooper urged Israel and Hamas to uphold the ceasefire, which has been strained by recent clashes, including Israeli airstrikes causing casualties in Gaza. Efforts to resolve tensions over Israeli hostages’ bodies have further escalated the situation.

During her maiden trip to the Middle East as Foreign Secretary, Ms Cooper pressed Israel to facilitate more aid into war-torn Gaza. She stressed the urgency for global leaders to advance the peace plan, brokered by Donald Trump and other nations like Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey.

At the Manama Dialogue security summit in Bahrain, Ms Cooper highlighted the need to prevent Gaza from being trapped in a state of uncertainty. She called for the removal of aid restrictions, specifically urging the opening of border crossings to expedite essential assistance to the enclave.

Addressing the severe suffering endured in Gaza, Ms Cooper emphasized the significance of upholding the ceasefire and ensuring the swift delivery of humanitarian aid. The UK pledged £4 million to clear landmines hindering support efforts in Gaza, citing expertise gained from past conflict experiences.

The Foreign Secretary initiated diplomatic relations with Palestine, following the UK’s recognition of a Palestinian state. However, challenges lie ahead, including disarming Hamas, establishing a new government, and ensuring lasting security for all parties.

Ms Cooper stressed the fragility of the ceasefire and the imperative of working towards genuine peace. She advocated for the access of foreign journalists to Gaza to witness and convey the extensive devastation, emphasizing the need for sustainable reconstruction led by Palestinians.

Even post-peace agreements, Ms Cooper underscored the enduring impact of conflict on children, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding and supporting those most affected.
