Residents in England and Wales who were born before 22 September 1959 could be eligible for financial assistance from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to help with their winter heating expenses, provided they meet specific criteria.
Those who qualify could receive a winter fuel payment ranging from £100 to £300, thanks to a decision by Chancellor Rachel Reeves to reinstate this benefit for around nine million pensioners.
While most eligible individuals will receive the payment automatically, there have been changes to the system. There are five groups that will not receive the payment, even if they are 66 years old and reside in England or Wales.
If a state pensioner earns over £35,000 in the tax year 2025/26, the payment will be reclaimed through a tax code adjustment in the following year. This process usually occurs automatically via the PAYE system.
For self-employed individuals or high-income earners, the payment will be recovered when they file a self-assessment tax return. Alternatively, they can choose to opt out of the payment instead of having it recouped through these methods.
While some care home residents will receive the winter fuel payment, there are specific conditions under which they may not be eligible.
Eligible recipients of the winter fuel payment will be notified of the amount they will receive through a letter in October or November. The DWP expects most payments to be made in November or December of this year.
It is important to remain cautious of scams related to the payment that may impersonate government services. Individuals should avoid sharing personal information like bank account details or passwords. Any suspicious activity should be reported promptly.
Pensioners in Northern Ireland may also qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment from the Northern Ireland Executive, following eligibility rules similar to those in England and Wales. However, individuals in Scotland do not receive the winter fuel payment but might be eligible for the pension age winter heating payment.
