Saturday’s brutal stabbing incident on a train in Cambridgeshire has been clarified by the Home Secretary as not linked to terrorism. Shabana Mahmood provided an update confirming that two individuals taken into custody in Huntingdon are British-born British citizens. She commended the swift response of emergency services and lauded the “exceptional bravery” exhibited by both the train’s staff and passengers.
The authorities disclosed that a 32-year-old British male and a 35-year-old British national of Caribbean descent were apprehended. Eleven individuals were harmed during the alarming episode, with nine sustaining severe injuries on a train headed to London. Of the injured, four have been discharged following treatment. The stabbings occurred shortly after the train made a stop in Peterborough.
Ms. Mahmood expressed her thoughts for the victims, their families, and friends in a Twitter post. She extended her gratitude to the British Transport Police, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the East of England Ambulance Service for their prompt and professional actions that saved lives. She reiterated that the incident is not deemed as terrorism and confirmed the arrest of the two British nationals. The investigation remains ongoing, with regular updates being provided by law enforcement.
British Transport Police Superintendent John Loveless characterized the incident as “shocking” and refrained from speculating on the motives behind the stabbings. The initial arrest was made within eight minutes of the attack being reported. He detailed that out of the 11 individuals hospitalized, four have been discharged after initially being in critical condition. There is currently no indication that the attack was related to terrorism.
Mr. Loveless emphasized that while a major incident was declared and counter-terrorism policing initially supported the investigation, there is no evidence to suggest a terrorist connection at this point. The distressing attack unfolded on a train departing from Peterborough station in Cambridgeshire at 7:42 pm, where police reportedly deployed a Taser on a man wielding a large knife.
British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with the attack that occurred on the service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on Saturday evening.
