Ryder Cup star Henrik Stenson faces uncertainty in securing spots in specific DP World Tour events following a hefty fine for his involvement with the breakaway group LIV Golf. The 49-year-old may no longer have guaranteed entry to tournaments like the BMW PGA Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and the Scottish Open due to a new undisclosed rule, as reported by The Telegraph.
Previously, renowned players like Stenson would have received exemptions for Rolex Series events based on their legend status. However, recent changes have seen players in the top four of the Tour’s career money list and meeting other criteria drop to Category 11a from Category 5, affecting their qualification prospects.
Stenson, ranking seventh in career earnings exceeding £28 million, faced repercussions for his LIV Golf association, resulting in a two-month ban and subsequent return to the tour. The rule adjustment also impacts players like Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Paul Casey in tournament qualification.
While Stenson could still be considered for elite tournaments or receive sponsor invitations, The Telegraph’s report indicates that at least one LIV player was denied participation in the upcoming Desert Classic. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy’s victory in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai saw him clinch the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth consecutive year, surpassing Seve Ballesteros and eyeing Colin Montgomerie’s record for the most Order of Merit wins.
