MPs have raised concerns over bots buying up driving test slots, leaving learners struggling to book tests. Scammers are purchasing tests from the DVSA portal to resell at inflated prices, with some learners paying up to £500, far above the standard cost of £62.
The issue has been exacerbated by an increase in test date swapping, a practice that has been exploited by third parties. Data reveals a significant rise in license number swapping, from 2.7% in Jan 2019 to 34.1% in Oct 2023. Labour MP Amanda Hack has led efforts to address this problem, calling for decisive action to combat the exploitation of learners seeking fair access to driving tests.
The Department for Transport has acknowledged the problem and stated that measures are being implemented to curb scammers. Initiatives include increasing the number of driving examiners and trainers to boost test availability. While progress has been made, efforts to reduce waiting times and ensure equitable access to driving tests will continue as part of the government’s Plan for Change.
