British tennis player Dan Evans once considered leaving the Great Britain Davis Cup team due to feeling disrespected by a selection choice. Evans, a key player in the 2015 Davis Cup victory, expressed his frustration in 2022 when he was not chosen for the doubles event, hinting at his possible withdrawal from the prestigious team competition. Despite his limited doubles experience on the tour, Evans argued that his skills were sufficient for the Davis Cup.
In an interview with the i, Evans criticized the selection process, stating that he had never been given the opportunity to play doubles in the Davis Cup. He emphasized that his abilities in doubles were overlooked, and the team should focus on gameplay compatibility rather than just rankings when making selections.
Evans’ discontent grew after being left out of the doubles lineup at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, where he was only assigned singles matches while other players competed in doubles. Reflecting on his past attempts to secure a doubles spot, Evans expressed confusion and disappointment at the decisions made by captain Leon Smith. He hinted at the possibility of reevaluating his future involvement in the Davis Cup if the situation did not improve.
Despite his concerns, Evans eventually partnered with Neal Skupski in a successful doubles match against Colombia in the following year’s Davis Cup. However, his participation in the 2023 finals was cut short due to an injury.
In the current 2025 Davis Cup Finals, Britain faced elimination in the qualifying round against Japan, losing 3-2. Meanwhile, Italy advanced to the semi-finals with Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli leading the charge. Italy’s top players, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, were absent, but they still managed to defeat Austria. Berrettini secured a singles victory, and Cobolli secured the team’s spot in the next round with another win.
The tournament saw exciting matches, with Italy progressing and Britain facing an early exit. This year’s Davis Cup Finals promise more thrilling tennis action as top nations compete for the prestigious title.
