Mitchell Lawrie has made history by becoming the youngest player ever to secure three senior men’s titles, surpassing the previous record set by Luke Littler. The talented teenage darts player from Scotland claimed victory at the WDF Irish Classic in Killarney on Saturday, just four days after turning 15.
In a dominant performance, Lawrie defeated Ronan McDonagh in the final, showcasing his skill with four 180s and an impressive 98.60 average in a 5-1 win. Prior to this, he also clinched the Irish Classic Youths title by defeating Kaya Basal 4-1 with an average of 90.95.
Lawrie’s family, including his father Fraser and grandfather Dougie, were present at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland, cheering him on as he added another title to his name.
At 15 years old, Lawrie achieved this milestone, beating Littler’s record by five months. He is now preparing to compete in the men’s and youth WDF world championships at Lakeside later this month.
While Lawrie gears up for the upcoming championships, the reigning PDC World Champion is set to defend his title at Alexandra Palace. Lawrie, who previously won the British Open and Welsh Open earlier this year, will have ample time to prepare for a potential showdown against his predecessor.
Despite not being able to compete against Littler in PDC competitions until he turns 16, Lawrie’s family remains supportive of his journey. In an interview with The Sun, Dougie emphasized that they wish for Lawrie to pave his own path in the world of darts.
Dougie also mentioned that he played a pivotal role in teaching Lawrie how to play darts, instilling in him a sense of aggression from a young age, which has contributed to his success on the oche.
As the darting world anticipates the upcoming World Championship, reminiscing on the legends of the game, names like Eric Bristow, Jocky Wilson, John Lowe, and Bobby George resurface, reflecting on the rich history of the sport.
