In recent times, QR codes have become widely utilized, offering convenience but also posing risks. These easily scannable images are ubiquitous, enabling users of Android and iPhone devices to swiftly access websites, download apps, sign into streaming services, and make payments by simply pointing their phone cameras at them. While QR codes streamline tasks, they also present a dark side, with numerous individuals falling victim to counterfeit versions created to steal personal information.
Although QR code attacks are not a new phenomenon, they are on the rise and becoming more sophisticated.
A concerning new scam targeting users is known as “brushing.” In this deceptive tactic, scammers send unsolicited packages to homes containing a false QR code. These parcels typically arrive without sender information, purposely triggering curiosity. Recipients are instructed to scan the code to discover the sender or return instructions, unknowingly exposing themselves to fraud.
Individuals who fall for this scam risk divulging sensitive personal details, which cybercriminals can exploit for financial gain or further fraudulent activities.
Research by cybersecurity company NordVPN indicates a growing issue. The firm estimates that over 26 million people may have been redirected to malicious websites through fake QR codes without their knowledge.
“QR codes have emerged as an entry point for cybercriminals. Unlike typical phishing emails, where warning signs are recognizable, a physical QR code often instills trust,” explained NordVPN’s Chief Technology Officer, Marijus Briedis.
“Approach every unexpected QR code with the same caution as you would with a link from an unknown email sender,” he advised.

While QR codes offer convenience, the key advice is clear: exercise caution before scanning anything on your smartphone and refrain from sharing personal information without verifying the source behind the code.
