Lorenzo Musetti had a tense week but successfully secured a coveted spot at the ATP Finals. Despite initial uncertainty, the 23-year-old’s chance to qualify seemed in jeopardy after a disappointing exit at the Paris Masters, allowing Felix Auger-Aliassime to surpass him in the Race to Turin.
Heading to the ATP 250 event in Athens, Musetti knew his fate was in his hands. Winning the tournament would guarantee his place at the ATP Finals, whereas anything less would see Auger-Aliassime secure the final spot.
Although Musetti, ranked No. 9 globally, lost to Novak Djokovic in the Athens final, Djokovic’s subsequent withdrawal from the year-end Finals automatically granted Musetti entry. The Italian swiftly flew to Turin for the ATP Finals and is set to face Taylor Fritz on Monday.
Expressing his joy on social media, Musetti described it as a dream come true. He also shared an image of himself and his team en route to Italy.
While aiming for his third career title at the Hellenic Championship, Musetti, who last won a title in 2022, faced disappointment in Athens, his third final loss this season.
After the match, Musetti revealed that Djokovic informed him about his withdrawal, leading to a jovial exchange between them. Musetti supported Djokovic’s decision to delay the announcement until the last moment.
Djokovic’s late exit prompted the ATP to swiftly find a replacement alternate. With Musetti taking Djokovic’s place, Alexander Bublik moved up as the first alternate. Casper Ruud, ranked 10th globally, stepped in as the second alternate after Bublik. Both players stand to earn £118k as alternates, with potential for increased fees if they are called upon to play.
