“12-Year Wait for Justice: Man Sentenced in Assault Case”

A man, Ian Cleary, was sentenced to two to four years in prison for a sexual assault that occurred 12 years ago at a university in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The victim, who was assaulted when she was 18 years old, reported the incident to the police at the time but no action was taken. Cleary, now 32, broke into the woman’s residence hall, forced his way into her room, and assaulted her. In 2019, he sent a disturbing message to the victim on social media, which led her to seek justice.

During the court proceedings, the victim expressed her frustration with the system’s failure to protect her and stated that her story reflects the experiences of many women. Despite guidelines suggesting a potential 10-year sentence, Cleary received a lighter punishment. The victim’s lawyer, Andrea Levy, noted that while the sentence was less than expected, there was relief that the case was resolved.

Although the judge criticized Cleary’s actions, he acknowledged Cleary’s admission of guilt and his attempt at seeking forgiveness. Cleary, who had moved to California after the assault, returned to Pennsylvania to face the consequences of his actions. The victim emphasized the lasting impact of the assault on her life and her family, expressing gratitude for the accountability finally achieved after a decade of waiting.
